The Cloud Infrastructure team at Coupang builds and operates the platform on which our entire Cloud-based business operates. Our team manages our core computing, storage and networking resources to ensure efficiency, availability and scalability. We also develop tooling and platform components that enable Coupang developers to easily and correctly use this infrastructure in a self-service manner through mechanisms such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
As a Senior Staff Engineer on this global team, your goal will be to build a state-of-the-art cloud platform with industry-leading usability, efficiency and reliability. You will operate as a technical leader diving deep into business problems, understanding customer pain points, and building new systems / services to address these issues. You will identify limitations of our existing architectures, and lead efforts with engineering teams across the company to solve them. You will work deeply with public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as core technologies including Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker and Linux. You will create a vision, strategies and roadmaps for scalable and robust growth of our multiple complex cloud environments, then work with technical leaders across the company to realize them.

As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Cloud Platform team, you will own, innovate and relentlessly improve the technological foundation of Coupang’s business. Our team architects, builds and operates all of Coupang’s Cloud environments and networks, including our Cloud Platform infrastructure, services and processes. We also build and operate the core systems that Coupang engineers use to manage their services. Our work enhances company-wide efficiency, availability, scalability and system quality, and improves productivity for thousands of engineers. We enable Coupang’s rapid innovation and growth by building our systems to be highly automated, providing self-service for our internal customers with strong guardrails for safety.
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide a roadmap and vision for scalable and robust growth for our cloud infrastructure and platform services.
- Identify bottlenecks and opportunities for major improvements in cloud infrastructure usage, network architecture and service operations. Design and implement solutions with a high degree of systematic automation.
- Hands-on team leader and contributor, working on infrastructure design and implementation, self-service tooling, cloud backend deployment and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with cross-team stakeholders and lead engineers on key mission-critical projects.
- 100% accountable for the reliable, scalable and optimized operation of our cloud architecture and core platform services.
- Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness through technical improvements and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
- 12+ years of experience in Cloud backend engineering, Cloud networking, Cloud Design, Deployment, DevOps, or related field (10+ years’ experience with advanced degree).
- 5+ years of experience leading system design and architecture leveraging Cloud technologies (AWS / Azure / GCP / Private Cloud).
- 5+ years of building and operating infrastructure as code or related infrastructure automation.
- Working experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Linux and cloud services integrations.
- Strong analytical skills & ability to deep dive into cloud infra and systems architecture across a wide range of focus areas.
- Prior experience building and/or operating highly available and scalable services in a Cloud environment.
- Excellent cross-group collaboration, outstanding verbal and written communication.
Preferred:
- Masters or other advanced degree, in Computer Science or equivalent
- Strong Experience on Cloud DevOps tools and coding (e.g. CI/CD, IaC, Terraform, Cloud Formation, Ansible, Python).
- Expertise in network architecture, standards and protocols.
Pay & Benefits:
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.The base pay for this position ranges from $171,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $273,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
