Job Description
Role Overview
The Merchant Strategy Manager plays a core role in shaping Coupang’s merchant-side strategy. This role is responsible for developing analytical frameworks, measurement methodologies, and algorithms that define how the business evaluates merchant selection, coverage, pricing, and expansion.
Working closely with Analytics, Product, Operations, and Sales, this role focuses on turning large, complex datasets into repeatable insights, metrics, and decision tools that directly support business growth. The scope is highly strategic, with ownership over initiatives that influence both what the business prioritizes and how success is measured.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Business-Critical Initiatives
- Support and drive merchant-side initiatives that are critical to near- and mid-term business growth
- Help define the strategic roadmap for how merchant data, insights, and metrics are used across the organization
- Translate high-level business questions into structured analytical and measurement frameworks
Measurement, KPIs & Analytics Frameworks
- Own the design and evolution of merchant-related KPIs, ensuring metrics are:
- customer- and outcome-oriented
- analytically sound
- actionable for cross-functional teams
- Partner with Analytics to build scalable measurement frameworks that continuously generate new insights, rather than one-off analyses
- Define diagnostic metrics and leading indicators to explain why performance is changing, not just what is changing
- Ensure consistency and clarity in how merchant performance is measured across teams and forums
Algorithms & Insight Generation
- Develop algorithms and rule-based models to solve concrete business problems (e.g., identifying ghost stores, classifying merchant types, detecting inefficiencies in selection, pricing, or coverage)
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of analyses: problem framing, methodology design, validation, and communication
- Proactively surface insights that influence strategic decisions in a fast-moving environment
Cross-functional Collaboration & Execution
- Work closely with Analytics, Product, Operations, and Sales to ensure strategy and measurement translate into execution
- Act as a thought partner to cross-functional leaders by pressure-testing assumptions and proposing data-backed alternatives
- Support alignment across teams by providing a shared analytical and measurement language
Qualifications
Required
- Experience in strategy, analytics, consulting, bizops, or data-driven roles
- Strong analytical skillset; able to work independently with large datasets (SQL proficiency required)
- Experience designing KPIs, metrics, or measurement frameworks for complex business problems
- Ability to structure ambiguous questions and build practical, scalable solutions
- Strong communication skills in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment
- Business Japanese and Business English
Preferred
- Experience in marketplaces, e-commerce, food delivery, or platform businesses
- Background in management consulting, corporate strategy, or advanced analytics
- Familiarity with experimentation, optimization problems, or applied data science concepts
- Comfort operating in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with evolving priorities
What Success Looks Like
- Merchant strategy decisions are driven by clear, well-defined KPIs and analytical frameworks
- Metrics are trusted, consistently used, and clearly tied to business outcomes
- New insights are generated proactively and at speed as the business evolves
- Leadership and cross-functional teams share a common understanding of merchant performance
Why This Role
- Ownership over high-impact, business-critical strategy and measurement problems
- Opportunity to define how success is measured, not just reported
- Close partnership with senior leadership and core execution teams
